BSN Jobs

BSN is a bachelor of science in nursing, a degree that lands in a posting's requirements beside certifications. Hospitals sort applicants with it for the same bedside jobs, and it's one route into a graduate nursing program.

The Army describes its nurses one way and appoints them another

The Army Nurse Corps describes its officers as graduates of accredited baccalaureate, master's or doctoral nursing programs. Its own appointment regulation is looser: AR 135-101 lets registered nurses from associate degree and diploma programs apply for a Reserve appointment once they have 12 months of full-time experience as an RN. One employer, one profession, and the degree is a description in one document and a waivable threshold in the next. A posting naming BSN is doing the same thing somewhere on that range.

Your questions about BSN jobs, answered

Does any state require a BSN to keep working as an RN?

New York does, for a license it issued after June 18, 2020. Chapter 502 of 2017 amended its Education Law so an RN has to hold a baccalaureate or higher degree in nursing within 10 years of that license to keep registering past the deadline. Chapter 380 of 2018 moved the start date out from 2019 to that June. The exemptions all point back at that same date: an unrestricted RN license in any state, a US territory or Canada issued by then, an NCLEX application already filed, or a place in a nursing program held from then through to completion, a pending application to one included. The first deadlines arrive at registration renewals from June 18, 2030, and NYSED can grant one extension of 2, never both: a conditional registration for a nurse who agrees to finish within the year, extendable once more for a fee, or a single 2-year exemption for one denied admission at least twice for lack of seats.

Is the degree written into any credential's rules?

California names it as one of 2 routes to its public health nurse certificate. Its Board of Registered Nursing takes a California RN license plus either a baccalaureate or entry-level master's in nursing, or a bachelor's in another field with a specialized public health nursing program associated with an accredited baccalaureate nursing school. Either way the coursework has to include public health nursing with at least 90 hours of supervised clinical experience in a public health setting, and work experience doesn't stand in for it. The application also wants 7 hours of training in the detection, prevention, reporting and treatment of child abuse and neglect, taken inside the degree or as a board-approved continuing education course, and since AB 2471 the certificate stays valid for as long as your California RN license does.

Does a BSN expire?

A degree is awarded once and doesn't lapse. There's no renewal cycle attached to it and no continuing education to log, so nothing about the BSN can run out while you're between jobs.
