Contract healthcare pay and roles

Contract healthcare jobs run for a fixed term set in the posting, commonly 13 weeks on a travel assignment, and finish when that term does. Some are extended and some turn into staff roles. Check each posting for the term length and for whether housing or travel is covered.

Your questions about contract healthcare jobs, answered

Is a contract healthcare job the same as travel nursing?

Travel assignments are one kind of contract job. Contract also covers local assignments and project work, with no travel and no housing package.

On a contract job, is the agency or the facility my employer?

On an agency assignment the agency employs you and the facility is its client. That decides who pays you and who withholds your tax. Some employers hire contract staff directly, with no agency in the middle.

Do I need a license in the state where the contract is?

Yes, and it has to be valid where you work, not where you live. RNs and LPNs in compact states practice across them on one multistate license; nurse practitioners don't, since that compact stops at registered and practical nursing. Physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and EMS run compacts of their own, each on a different list of states. Check processing time before you agree to a start date.

What should I check before signing a contract?

Guaranteed hours a week, the cancellation clause, and what happens to housing if the assignment ends early. Cancellation catches people: a facility can cut an assignment when its patient numbers drop.

Does contract work look bad on a resume?

No. Short assignments are ordinary in healthcare staffing and hiring managers read them that way. Put the term and the reason beside each one.
