Caregiver pay and benefits
A caregiver arrives as a stranger in somebody's living room and ends up part of the household routine. Agencies match on temperament as much as on skills, and the client can ask for a different caregiver.

Companion care and personal care are different services
Companion care is meals, errands and laundry; personal care adds hands-on help with bathing, toileting and transfers. Florida registers homemaker and companion agencies on their own, and hands-on work needs a home health agency or nurse registry license. California registers home care aides for both and asks an agency-affiliated aide for 5 hours of training before the first job, then 5 a year. New Jersey lets a firm send an uncertified worker on companion and homemaker jobs with written notice to the client, and keeps personal care for certified aides.
Your questions about caregiver jobs, answered
- What's the difference between a live-in and a 24-hour caregiver job?
The difference is whether anyone sleeps. A live-in role gives you a place to sleep and a break period, and pay is structured around that. A 24-hour case means continuous awake coverage and is usually staffed by 2 caregivers on split shifts. Agencies use the words loosely, so ask what the sleeping arrangement actually is and how the hours are counted.
- What's respite care?
It's short-term cover so a family caregiver can stop. It might be a few hours a week, a weekend, or 2 weeks while somebody travels, and the work is the same personal care with less time to learn the client. Agencies use it to fill gaps in a schedule, so respite shifts are a common way into steady hours.
- Are caregivers expected to do housework?
Light housekeeping connected to the client, yes. Their laundry, their dishes, their bathroom, a meal. What causes friction is the rest of the household appearing on the list, and the care plan decides that. Raising it with the agency early is easier than renegotiating 6 weeks in.
