Not every CPI card covers physical intervention
CPI's training sits in a ladder, and an ad that says CPI names the vendor without the rung. Verbal Intervention stops at the communication framework and verbal strategies, with no physical technique in it. Nonviolent Crisis Intervention is the foundational course, and it already carries restrictive interventions; the physical skills versions above it go further for higher-risk work. The vendor also sells stand-alone programs outside that ladder, so the three letters alone don't say what you were trained in.
Your questions about CPI certified jobs, answered
- Can I get CPI certified on my own before I apply?
CPI works through organizations. It certifies instructors on an employer's own staff, works on site alongside those instructors, and runs Direct Delivery, where its trainers take the staff through for an employer that has no instructors of its own. The Instructor Certification Program is the piece it advertises for direct booking, and it qualifies you to teach the course to staff at your workplace.
- Will an employer train me in it?
An employer that asks for CPI is already running the training somehow, so it has a route to put a new hire through it. Worth knowing too: the credential filter takes postings that name the training as preferred as well as the ones that require it.
- Does another de-escalation certificate count instead?
That's the employer's call, and the cards don't convert. Each program is its own vendor's certification taught by that vendor's instructors, so a workplace trained in one has no way to check what another one covered. A posting that says CPI or equivalent is the one leaving that door open. Handle With Care is the other program with its own list here.
