Orthodontic assisting is a different chair
An orthodontic assistant sees the same patients on a cycle: wires off and on, aligners and retainers fitted, scans and photographs at each visit. Minnesota lets a licensed dental assistant take brackets off and keeps the bonding with the dentist. California issues an orthodontic assistant permit to preposition and cure brackets once the dentist has approved where they go. Arizona keeps assistants off the wires and brackets themselves. The posting rarely says which of those it's hiring for.

- What's an expanded functions dental assistant?
An assistant permitted to do reversible procedures a dentist would otherwise do, such as placing and finishing restorations, after extra training and a state permit. The title and the permitted list are state-specific, so EFDA postings pay attention to where you were trained.
- What do postings mean by four-handed dentistry?
You work the procedure with the dentist: seated opposite, passing and receiving instruments, keeping the field clear and anticipating the next step so neither of you looks up. An office that names it in a posting wants someone who already has it. Our RDA guide covers the credential side.
- Do dental assistants only work chairside?
Not in most offices. Sterilization, stocking, x-rays where you hold the permit, and a share of the front desk all land on the same person, particularly in small practices. Larger groups and specialty offices split the work more, so a posting that names one specialty is usually a narrower job than a general-practice one.
