Dental Hygienist pay and benefits

In a private practice a hygienist runs their own column of the schedule while the dentist works another, and the two meet at the end of the appointment for the exam. The appointment length a practice books separates two hygiene jobs.

The job is hard on the body

The work happens at arm's length in a held posture, and the wear turns up in the neck, the back, the shoulder and the wrist. Pooled studies put musculoskeletal pain across dental staff near 80%, and a 2005 mailed survey of hygienists in Los Angeles and Orange counties found 27% had cut their hours because of it. The fixes are ordinary: loupes fitted to you, a saddle stool, moving the patient instead of yourself, and instruments sharp enough that you aren't forcing them.

Your questions about dental hygienist jobs, answered

What's a temp dental hygienist?

A hygienist who covers single days at practices that are short-staffed, booked through an agency or an app. Rates are quoted by the hour, you take the office as you find it, and nothing is guaranteed beyond the day you accepted. Plenty of hygienists build a full week this way, and others use it to try out practices before committing to one.

Can a dental hygienist work at more than one practice?

Yes, and it's common enough that postings often say 3 days rather than five. Two part-time chairs at different offices is a normal working week, so a part-time posting isn't necessarily part-time income. The license is yours, not the practice's, so nothing stops you holding both.

Does a dentist have to be on site while a hygienist works?

That depends on the state. Many allow some form of direct access, where a hygienist can see patients in settings like schools, nursing homes or public health programs without a dentist on the premises, and the permitted settings and procedures differ widely. In a private practice a supervising dentist is usually there regardless. Our licensing guide goes through the state rules.
