What a general dentist refers out
Molars with difficult anatomy go to an endodontist, impacted thirds to an oral surgeon, gum disease and grafts to a periodontist, alignment to an orthodontist. Implants go either way: oral surgeons and periodontists both place them, and plenty of general dentists place their own rather than refer. Periodontist postings land on this page; the rest are advertised under the specialty's own name. Two practices advertising the same job can refer out very different amounts of it, so ask what stays in-house.

- What does a dentist posting mean by associate?
An employed dentist rather than an owner. You treat patients on someone else's schedule, in someone else's practice, and are paid on a percentage of production or collections, sometimes against a daily guarantee. It's how most dentists start, and the terms of that percentage are the part worth reading closely.
- What's a DSO?
A dental service organization: a company that owns the business side of a practice, the staffing, billing, marketing and equipment, while the dentists provide the care. DSO-backed groups hire steadily and hand you a full schedule from day one. It costs you autonomy over materials, labs and pace.
- Do dentists need a license in each state?
Yes, and every state licenses separately. The written half is settled: the INBDE replaced the two-part NBDE and is now the only national exam. More states accept an out-of-state clinical exam than used to, with every state except Delaware and New York taking ADEX, and Colorado, Minnesota, Ohio and Washington among those accepting a PGY-1 residency year as an alternative to it. New York skips the clinical exam and requires the residency. Moving still means a fresh application, with education, exams and license all re-verified.
