The specialist credentials a posting names
CDR board-certifies 8 specialties: renal, oncology, pediatric, pediatric critical care, gerontological, digestive health, sports, and obesity and weight management. Each asks for 2 years in your own credential and 2,000 hours in the specialty within the last 5 years, then an exam. Obesity and weight management is the one open beyond dietetics, to nurse practitioners, pharmacists and other clinicians on the same terms. A posting that names one wants somebody who has already worked that specialty.

- Does Medicare pay for a dietitian's outpatient visits?
Only for 2 diagnoses. Medical nutrition therapy is covered for diabetes and for renal disease, on a physician's referral, at 3 hours in the first year and two in the years after, with more if the physician says the condition or the treatment has changed. That narrow benefit explains where the outpatient posts cluster: dialysis and diabetes programs, while a hospital pays for the rest of the work out of the inpatient rate.
- What does a clinical dietitian do in a hospital?
The work is assessment and calculation, mostly. You screen admissions for malnutrition, work out what a patient can absorb and how, write tube feeding and parenteral nutrition recommendations, and follow the ones on ventilators or in renal failure whose needs change daily. It's a documentation-heavy job that lives inside the medical record.

A dietitian who covers several facilities on contract instead of working for one. Long-term care in particular is staffed this way, with a dietitian visiting each building for a set number of hours a month to review residents and sign off the menus. It suits people who want autonomy and their own schedule, and it usually means self-employment.
