BCBA certification: requirements, exam & renewal

What's BCBA certification?
BCBA stands for Board Certified Behavior Analyst, the graduate-level credential issued by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) for people who design and oversee applied behavior analysis (ABA) programs. A BCBA holds a master's degree or higher, has completed supervised fieldwork in behavior analysis, and has passed the BACB's certification exam. The BACB issues it nationally, and many states also license behavior analysts on top of the certification. BACB figures throughout this guide are current as of 2026, from the BCBA Handbook on bacb.com.
How BCBA compares to BCaBA and QMHP
BCBA is the independent-practice level, while BCaBA ranks below it and QMHP sits outside the BACB entirely. People mix up the three because all of them turn up in behavioral health postings.

If a posting asks for a QMHP, it's pointing at a particular state's own definition rather than the BACB, so check which state and which service the role bills under before you assume it maps to behavior analysis.
Who requires a BCBA
Employers that run ABA therapy programs require a BCBA to design treatment plans and supervise the staff who carry them out. That covers autism and ABA clinics, school districts, hospitals, home- and community-based providers, and telehealth companies. The BCBA writes the behavior plan, and behavior technicians and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) deliver the direct one-on-one therapy under it. Insurers usually require a BCBA to supervise and sign off before ABA services are reimbursed, which is why the credential is required in so many behavioral health job descriptions.
Requirements and eligibility
You need a qualifying graduate degree, behavior-analytic coursework, supervised fieldwork, and a passing exam score. The BACB's current eligibility requirements took effect on January 1, 2022, and a revised set is scheduled for 2027.
- A master's degree or higher. The degree can be in behavior analysis from an ABAI- or APBA-accredited program, or in another field paired with separate behavior-analytic coursework.
- Behavior-analytic coursework. Most candidates either earn a degree from an accredited program, which already includes the coursework, or complete a behavior-analytic course sequence at a qualifying university.
- Supervised fieldwork: 2,000 hours of Supervised Fieldwork, or 1,500 hours of Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork, accrued under a qualified supervisor.
- A passing score on the BCBA exam.
You don't need a state license to sit for the exam, though you may need one to practice once you're certified. Coursework has to begin before fieldwork, so sort out your program first.
What the BCBA exam covers
The BCBA exam tests applied behavior analysis against the BACB's test content outline, currently the 6th edition, which took effect on January 1, 2025. It runs 4 hours and holds 185 multiple-choice questions, of which 175 are scored and 10 are unscored pilot items you can't tell apart. Content spans the concepts and principles of behavior, measurement and data analysis, experimental design, behavior assessment, intervention and program design, and professional ethics. It's a broad exam, so candidates who trained through an accredited sequence usually spend weeks in dedicated review before their appointment.

The two-part fee catches people: your BACB application and your Pearson VUE appointment are billed separately, so budget for both. Continuing education is the recurring cost after that.
The BCaBA assistant path
BCaBA is the bachelor's-level version of the credential, for people who deliver ABA under a BCBA's supervision rather than independently. A BCaBA can't provide behavior-analytic services without a supervising BCBA. The requirements track the BCBA at a lower threshold: a bachelor's degree or higher, behavior-analytic coursework, and supervised fieldwork of 1,300 hours (or 1,000 concentrated). The BCaBA exam is also 4 hours, with 175 questions of which 150 are scored. The certification application is $175 to the BACB plus the same $125 Pearson VUE appointment fee, and it renews every 2 years on 20 CEUs, including 4 in ethics. Many people use the BCaBA as a step toward the BCBA once they finish a master's degree.
How to get certified
- Earn a qualifying master's degree, either in behavior analysis from an accredited program or in another field paired with separate behavior-analytic coursework.
- Complete your behavior-analytic coursework, and start it before you begin fieldwork.
- Accrue supervised fieldwork: 2,000 hours, or 1,500 concentrated, under a qualified supervisor.
- Apply to the BACB and pay the $245 certification application fee.
- Once approved, schedule and pay for your exam appointment with Pearson VUE ($125), then sit the 185-question, 4-hour exam.
- After you pass, maintain the credential with 32 CEUs every 2 years and follow the BACB ethics code.
On the job
Employers verify BCBA status against the BACB's public certificant registry, so keep your certification active and your CEUs logged before your renewal date. Ask at onboarding who pays for continuing education and supervision hours, since many ABA providers cover CEU courses and count the supervision you provide toward your own requirement. If you supervise BCaBAs or RBTs, remember that 3 of your 32 CEUs each cycle have to be in supervision.
