Subcutaneous insulin injections are one of the 8 routes the rule names for a medication assistant. Anyone who finished the training program before September 2025 and wants to give them has to add 15 hours of training focused on proper administration of subcutaneous insulin injections, send the evidence to the board, and hold off until the authorization is noted on the board verification. Inside the program the clinical instructor has to directly supervise the injections and document that the student completed them successfully. The standing bar still applies on top of the routes: nothing that calls for nursing assessment or judgment before administration, evaluation and follow up, even when the medication is given by an approved route.

Arkansas rules the 40 hours out by name, against a training program that runs a minimum of 90 hours. The exclusion reaches wider than that one course. Anyone trained in a program the Department of Human Services hasn't approved as a training provider fails to qualify and isn't allowed to sit the examination, and the rules offer hospitals, emergency medical technician and medical assistant programs, correspondence courses, independent study, on-the-job training and in-service training as examples of what that catches. A home health aide can cross over on verification showing 74 hours of classroom training and 16 hours of supervised practical training, or the federal testing requirements, so an Arkansas home health aide has a route the personal care aide doesn't.

Arkansas calls working on it illegal practice. The rules say a person practicing while the certificate has lapsed is considered to be providing services illegally and is subject to the penalties in the statute behind the certificate. Getting current again starts with the renewal application, the current fee and a late fee, and what sits on top depends on how long it has been. Reactivation within 2 years asks for 10 contact hours of continuing education related to medication administration from the past 2 years, plus any other evidence the board asks for; between 2 and 5 years takes the same 10 hours or a medication-related academic course; past 5 years the board-approved training program and the certification examination both start over. Disciplinary proceedings freeze reinstatement until they finish, and an active holder's surplus continuing education, anything beyond the 8 contact hours a renewal period requires, doesn't carry forward.
