Florida lets a nurse assistant candidate sit the competency examination with no training program behind it, and it registers qualifying nurse practitioners for autonomous practice. Both credentials come from the Board of Nursing, which sits inside the Department of Health.

The conditions on autonomous registration
Section 464.0123 says the board shall register an applicant who meets its conditions. Among them: an active, unencumbered license to practice advanced nursing, no disciplinary action of the kind sections 456.072 and 464.018 describe within 5 years, at least 3,000 clinical practice hours in the 5 years before the request and worked under a physician's supervision, and 3 graduate-level semester hours, or the equivalent, in each of differential diagnosis and pharmacology in that same period. Financial responsibility is its own condition, at not less than $100,000 per claim and $300,000 in annual aggregate, met by insurance or by one of the other forms the statute allows.

1Your questions about healthcare jobs in Florida, answered
- Can I sit Florida's nurse assistant exam without taking a course?
There is a route for exactly that. Section 464.203 gives four ways to the certificate, and one of them is a minimum score on the nursing assistant competency examination plus either a high school diploma or being at least 18, with no approved program in between. Competency in reading and writing and a background screening are asked of everyone. Take the program and it runs 120 hours: 80 in the classroom and 40 clinical, at least 20 of the clinical hours in a nursing home. Our CNA certification guide covers the examination itself.
- How far does autonomous practice reach in Florida?
Primary care, by name. A registered autonomous APRN may engage in autonomous practice only in primary care practice, which section 464.0123 spells out as including family medicine, general pediatrics and general internal medicine. The registration also reaches no surgical procedure other than a subcutaneous one.
- Does Florida certify medication aides?
There's no credential of its own for it here. Florida's route is a 6-hour medication course on top of the CNA certificate, so the nursing assistant certification is the qualification the work turns on.
