Healthcare pay and roles in Indiana

Indiana keeps advanced practice nursing on paper. An APRN here works in collaboration with a licensed practitioner under a practice agreement, or on privileges granted by a hospital's governing board, and the nurse who wants to prescribe files that agreement with the board.

Inside the filed practice agreement

The filing is a prescribing requirement. An APRN applying under 848 IAC 5-1-1 for authority to prescribe legend drugs, including controlled substances, files the practice agreement with the board, and the rule wants complete names, home and business addresses, zip codes and telephone numbers, plus a list of all other offices or locations where the prescribing is authorized.

Your questions about healthcare jobs in Indiana, answered

Can a nurse practitioner practice independently in Indiana?

No. IC 25-23-1-19.4 says an advanced practice registered nurse shall operate in collaboration with a licensed practitioner as evidenced by a practice agreement, or by privileges granted by the governing board of a hospital. Each of those routes runs through somebody else's authority. Who signs the agreement, and how close they work to you, is a question for the employer on the Indiana nurse practitioner page.

What has to go to the collaborating practitioner?

Indiana puts a number on it. The nurse submits documentation of their own prescribing practices to the licensed practitioner within 7 days, and that documentation has to include at least a five percent (5%) random sampling of the charts and the medications prescribed for patients. The duty to submit runs with each prescribing agreement the nurse holds.

Does Indiana's QMA take more training than a nurse aide certificate?

It does. Indiana's qualified medication aide training runs 100 hours, against the 75 hours of the nurse aide credential it builds on. Indiana calls the credential a QMA, its own name for the kind of paper other states issue to a medication aide.
