Kentucky's aide credentials both sit with the Board of Nursing. The entry one is a registry listing, and the medication one is a certificate the board issues on conditions about who you already are and where you already work.

Admission to CMA I training under 201 KAR 20:700 takes reading, writing and speaking English, basic math, a high school diploma or equivalent, and one of two work histories. One is at least six months of continuous work as a state registered nurse aide in a nursing facility. The other is a direct care post at a long-term care facility not certified under 42 C.F.R. Part 483, at a facility run by the Department of Juvenile Justice, or at a Cabinet-licensed residential facility whose own scope of licensure covers the work. Training done, there are 60 days to pass the MACE or another board-approved examination. CMA I covers oral and topical medication under a nurse's delegation; CMA II adds insulin from a preloaded pen.

Your questions about healthcare jobs in Kentucky, answered
- Why isn't my Kentucky nursing license a multistate one?
Because the two are separate things here. Kentucky's compact statute, KRS 314.475, took effect on July 20, 2017, but the Board of Nursing still says plainly that not all Kentucky licenses are multistate licenses. The board's eligibility list runs to eleven items, from an unencumbered license to a valid Social Security number, and a fingerprint-based state and federal background check is one of them. Declaring Kentucky your primary state of residence sits beside that list, and the board routes the check through IdentoGo. There's no extra fee and no second application.
- Can a Kentucky medication aide give controlled substances?
Under conditions, yes. The Board of Nursing points at the facility regulations that provide for it, 902 KAR 20:048 for nursing homes and 902 KAR 20:480 for assisted living communities licensed with basic health care or with dementia care, both of which let a nurse delegate the administration of controlled substances to a CMA. A regularly scheduled one can be delegated where it's been prescribed and labeled in a container for a specific resident. A PRN dose adds three steps: the nurse assesses the resident, in person or virtually, before administration, assesses again afterwards, and documents the CMA's administration in the resident's record.
- Does Kentucky certify surgical assistants?
Yes. The Board of Medical Licensure issues that one, under KRS 311.864 to 311.890. Section 311.866 makes certification the rule and names the cases where it isn't required, and 311.888 says the certificate authorizes nothing that counts as practicing medicine or registered nursing. Our guide to becoming a surgical assistant sets Kentucky's route beside the states that license or register the job.
