Healthcare pay and roles in Ohio

In Ohio the nursing board certifies jobs that aren't nursing. The health department keeps the nurse aide registry. Two aide-level workers in the same building can therefore answer to two different agencies, under two different sets of rules.

Four certificates from the nursing board

The Board of Nursing writes its licensing rules in chapters 4723-1 through 4723-20 of the Administrative Code, and four more chapters cover people who aren't nurses at all: dialysis technicians in 4723-23, doulas in 4723-24, community health workers in 4723-26 and certified medication aides in 4723-27. Nurse aides are the exception. They belong to the Department of Health, which runs the Nurse Aide Registry, licenses the programs behind it and sets in rule 3701-18-23 what you have to show to sit the competency evaluation.

Your questions about healthcare jobs in Ohio, answered

What does Ohio's medication aide certificate take?

A board-approved training program under rule 4723-27-07 of the Administrative Code runs thirty clock hours of instruction in medication administration, and that includes both classroom and at least sixteen clock hours of supervised clinical practice. Where the clinical practice happens is restricted as well. The program has to place it in nursing homes the Ohio Department of Health has found free from real and present danger related to the administration of medications, or in residential care facilities it has found free from real and present danger related to the administration of medications and the provision of skilled nursing care. Three things lift that bar: an approved plan of correction, a danger the facility has since resolved, or clinical practice that began before the department gave notice.

Who certifies community health workers in Ohio?

The Board of Nursing, under chapter 4723-26 of the Administrative Code and section 4723.81 of the Revised Code. One door is a board-approved training program, and our guide to becoming a community health worker has the hour counts and sets Ohio beside the other states that certify the job. Rule 4723-26-03 opens a second door by endorsement. It recognizes a substantially similar out-of-state occupational license, and a government certificate from the uniformed services or from a state that issues no license. It also recognizes a private certification held in a state that issues neither, or three of the last five years spent doing the work in such a state or in the uniformed services. Renewal costs 15 contact hours of continuing education, though the first renewal doesn't have to carry them.

Does Ohio have a doula credential?

Yes, and it is the state's own. The Board of Nursing keeps a registry of State of Ohio Certified Doulas under section 4723.89 of the Revised Code, and the board's page says a certified doula is eligible for Medicaid reimbursement. Renewal takes 10 contact hours per period, and the first renewal is exempt.
