A nurse practitioner works under two agreements

Practice and prescribing take two separate documents here. Under 49 Pa. Code 21.282a a CRNP works within a collaborative agreement. Prescriptive authority then needs an agreement of its own under 21.285, and that one carries eight requirements. Four of them shape the job. It names at least one substitute physician to collaborate when the collaborating physician is unavailable and sets out the categories of drugs the CRNP may prescribe. A copy goes on file with the Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs, and the parties review and update the agreement at least every two years or whenever it changes. Both are written documents, and both name particular physicians.

Can my collaborating physician be licensed in another state?: No. 49 Pa. Code 21.282a says a CRNP may collaborate only with physicians who hold a current license to practice in this Commonwealth. A physician licensed next door in Ohio or New Jersey can't be the one named in the agreement, which is worth checking on a job near a state line or with a telehealth employer whose clinicians are spread around.
Can a Pennsylvania hospital make me stay past my shift?: It can't, outside three exceptions. Act 102, formally the Prohibition of Excessive Overtime in Health Care Act, sits at 43 P.S. 932.1 to 932.6 and bars a health care facility from requiring an employee to work beyond an agreed to, predetermined and regularly scheduled daily shift. It reaches people in direct patient care or clinical care services who are paid an hourly wage or classified as nonsupervisory for collective bargaining purposes, agency staff included, and leaves out physicians, physician assistants, dentists and non-clinical roles. An unforeseeable emergent circumstance is still grounds for mandating overtime, but only with three things true together: the extra hours are a last resort, the facility has exhausted reasonable efforts to find other staffing, and the facility gives you up to an hour to arrange for the care of your minor child or elderly or disabled family member. Finishing a patient care procedure already in progress is a separate exception, and it turns on whether your absence could have an adverse effect on the patient. Vacancies that arise from chronic short staffing are written out of the emergent circumstance. Section 3(c)(1) leaves on-call time alone unless it stands in for mandatory overtime. Complaints go to the Bureau of Labor Law Compliance within 60 days, under 34 Pa. Code 225.3(b).
Do pharmacy technicians have to be registered in Pennsylvania?: Yes, and the deadline applied to people already doing the work too. Registration with the State Board of Pharmacy opened on June 28, 2025 under Act 140 of 2020, and the board's wording is that technicians were required to register by June 28, 2026 to practice as a pharmacy technician. What expired on that second date was the 2019-to-2021 route: an applicant who had practiced at least a year between January 29, 2019 and January 29, 2021 could be registered without a high school diploma and without a board-approved program, and our pharmacy technician license guide sets that beside the way other states handle theirs.
