More about our team
The Nursing Technician is a Washington-registered nursing student or eligible recent graduate who provides patient care and performs only those nursing functions that are within the individual’s education, skills, and knowledge; have been verified in writing by the nursing program; and are authorized by hospital policy. The Nursing Technician practices only under the direct supervision of a qualified Registered Nurse (RN) who has agreed to supervise and is immediately available. The RN retains responsibility for the nursing process and the patient’s overall nursing care.
How you’ll contribute
The Nursing Technician may perform the following only when included on the current nursing-program verification, validated by the hospital, permitted by policy, and assigned by the supervising RN:
Gather and document patient information, including vital signs, intake and output, pain information, mobility, hygiene, nutrition, elimination, skin observations, and other approved data; promptly report findings and changes to the RN.
Participate in focused and comprehensive patient-data collection and in the nursing care process under RN guidance, without independently assessing, interpreting findings, establishing nursing diagnoses, planning care, or evaluating outcomes.
Provide approved patient care such as hygiene, toileting, feeding, repositioning, ambulation, range-of-motion activities, specimen collection, and other verified skills.
Perform approved treatments and procedures within demonstrated competency and the written verification from the nursing program.
Administer only medications that are specifically verified by the nursing program, validated by the hospital, allowed by law and policy, and assigned under direct RN supervision. Follow all medication-safety checks and immediately report concerns or adverse responses.
Use equipment only after documented training and competency validation.
Document care and observations accurately and promptly in the health record in accordance with hospital policy; documentation review or co-signature is completed when required by hospital policy.
Respond to changes in condition by stopping the activity when appropriate, remaining with the patient, and immediately notifying the supervising RN; activate emergency processes within training and hospital policy.
Maintain patient privacy, infection-prevention practices, therapeutic boundaries, a safe environment, and respectful patient- and family-centered care.
Perform other functions only when lawful, program-verified, competency-validated, permitted by hospital policy, and assigned by the supervising RN.
