Medical Scribe Jobs

Medical Scribe pay and benefits

Scribes are scheduled to a clinician or to a shift, so the hours belong to somebody else: a physician's clinic days, or the emergency department's nights and weekends. Postings say medical scribe, ER scribe or ED scribe, and all of them reach this page.

Whatever your hands did, the documentation belongs to the clinician who signs it, and they have to review and authenticate it before it stands. Orders are the harder line. CMS has said scribes don't count as staff who may enter them for its order-entry measure, state scope of practice governs the rest, and medical staff bylaws add their own limits, so what you type ends up entered by somebody licensed or credentialed to do it. Because of that boundary, employers hire people with no clinical background into the room.

Your questions about medical scribe jobs, answered

Are medical scribe jobs remote?

Many are. Virtual scribing connects you to the visit by audio or video from home, and it hires without clinical experience, which is unusual for remote healthcare work. In-person scribing puts you in the room with the physician, the reason pre-health applicants take the job.

Does the hospital employ the scribe, or a scribe company?

Either one, and it changes the job. A scribe company contracts with a practice or an emergency department and places its own employees there, so your employer and your worksite are different organizations and a change of contract can move you to a new site without changing jobs. Health systems that hire scribes onto their own payroll post the work with the department instead.

What's the difference between a medical scribe and a medical transcriptionist?

A scribe documents during the visit, in the room or on a live link, and the note is finished when the patient leaves. A transcriptionist works afterward from a recording, so the scribe job puts you in front of clinicians.
