Optometric Technician pay and benefits

A busy optometry practice runs on the technician staying one room ahead of the doctor. Every workup finished before the doctor walks in is a minute they don't spend waiting, and that's what a practice is paying for.

Where the practice co-manages surgery

In co-management the surgeon operates and sees the patient the day after, and the optometric practice picks the course up at the week and month visits inside the 90-day global period. The technician runs the workup at each one, so the same measurements repeat and the comparison is the point. About one Medicare cataract surgery in nine was co-managed nationally in 2013, and the state figures ran from near zero to about three in five. How much of your week this fills depends on where the practice sits.

Your questions about optometric technician jobs, answered

Is an optometric technician the same as an ophthalmic technician?

Nearly, and the difference is whose practice you're in. Optometric technicians support an optometrist; ophthalmic technicians support an ophthalmologist, often with more surgical workup. Both titles reach this page, so search either one. The certification ladder belongs to the ophthalmic side, running COA, COT and COMT, and optometric practices are glad to hire technicians who hold it.

What's scribing in an eye clinic?

Documenting the exam while the doctor performs it, so they can keep their hands and eyes on the patient. Eye clinics run high volumes of short visits with a great deal to record, so many practices train technicians to scribe as well as pretest, and some postings are scribe-first with the testing added.

Does certification change what an optometric technician gets hired for?

Practices train from scratch, so you can start without anything. Certified technicians get the harder testing, and they're the ones who move into a specialty or surgical practice. Our ophthalmic certification guide compares the three levels.
