PALS Jobs

PALS is pediatric advanced life support, the American Heart Association's course for recognizing, stabilizing and resuscitating seriously ill or injured children. Beyond children's hospitals and pediatric intensive care, it turns up wherever young patients are sedated.

The national readiness standard names no course

Hospitals ask for PALS. The standard above them doesn't. In January 2026 the AAP, ACEP and ENA published a new joint statement on pediatric readiness, with the American College of Surgeons on it for the first time, and it says every ED caring for children can appoint a physician and a nurse as pediatric emergency care coordinators. That pair owns staff skills, policies, equipment, quality improvement, and the liaison with the hospital's and the trauma system's quality committees. Nowhere in it is PALS named.

Your questions about PALS jobs, answered

Is PALS the card for newborn work?

A baby at a delivery belongs to NRP, which has a page of its own (NRP). The pediatric guidelines say as much themselves: at birth the neonatal ones are the set to follow. The weeks after birth they leave to the patient's physiology and the unit's own practice, and past the newborn period PALS has it.

How old is a PALS patient?

PALS runs to 18 years of age, newborn infants excepted, and that's a wider range than the basic course draws. Pediatric basic life support hands over to the adult guidelines at puberty, so a teenager past it is an adult for basic life support while the advanced algorithms and the weight-based dosing stay pediatric. A department that treats adolescents can need the card even when nobody there would call it a children's unit.

Does PALS cover the adults in a department that treats both?

PALS is written for children, so a department taking whoever arrives asks for ACLS as well. The 2 cards are separate lines on a requirements list, with their own expiry dates and their own renewal bookings, and letting one lapse doesn't put the other at risk.
