Who is allowed behind the counter at all
California law says what an unlicensed person may do inside a pharmacy at all: clerical work, inventory control, housekeeping, delivery and maintenance. The same 5 words appear twice in the code: once for hospital pharmacies, where the pharmacist in charge signs off, and once for everywhere else, where a pharmacist must stay on the premises. It's why a posting can be written around stock and the register without touching a prescription. - Is a pharmacy assistant the same as a pharmacy clerk?
Usually, and in most states the job carries no credential. Two states break that: Washington registers pharmacy assistants with its pharmacy commission, and Connecticut has required unlicensed staff working inside the dispensing area to register as a clerk since October 2024. Some employers also use assistant for a trainee technician role, which is its own registered category in Texas.
- Where does a pharmacy assistant's job stop and a technician's begin?
At whatever your state counts as preparing a prescription, and states draw that line in different places. California lets unlicensed staff type labels and enter prescription data while reserving the counting and packaging for a technician. Connecticut bars registered clerks from order entry outright, so its unlicensed tier gets less than California's. New York goes the other way and puts counting and labeling in the same unlicensed list as data entry.
- How do I move from pharmacy assistant to technician?
Register with your state board, then take a certification exam where the state or the employer wants one. Time you've already worked behind the counter can count toward the experience route to that exam in some states, so ask the pharmacist to document it from your first week.
