What the -A and -C in a Virginia posting mean now
Postings out of Virginia still ask for a QMHP-A or a QMHP-C, the adult and child versions the state registered separately for years. Regulations effective May 7, 2025 replaced both with a single QMHP registration, so the suffix in an ad now points at a caseload. Adults on one side, children and adolescents on the other. The statute still lists both sub-terms, so the letters aren't going away, but they don't describe two credentials anymore.
Your questions about QMHP jobs, answered
- What does it take to be a QMHP?
It depends on the state, and the spread is wide. Virginia sets a bachelor's degree as the floor and registers you with its Board of Counseling (Va. Code 54.1-3520). Oregon asks for a graduate degree in psychology, social work, recreational art or music therapy, or a behavioral science field, and it also takes a bachelor's in nursing or occupational therapy if Oregon licenses you in it, or an equivalent degree whose transcript shows coursework meeting the competencies (OAR 309-019-0125(14)). Neither one travels to the other state, and Virginia counts supervised hours on top of the degree where Oregon's rule stops at the degree itself.
- Which employers ask for a QMHP?
Virginia's statute answers that one directly: a QMHP there works for the state's behavioral health, corrections or education departments, or for a provider the behavioral health department licenses (Va. Code 54.1-3500). Oregon attaches its version to staff at providers holding a state certificate of approval. The designation belongs to the system a state licenses and oversees, so the letters in a posting mean whatever that state's rule says they mean.
- Can I take a QMHP job while my registration is in process?
Virginia built a tier for exactly that. It registers a qualified mental health professional-trainee under 18VAC115-80-65, and they do the work under supervision while they finish what full registration needs. Not every state runs an equivalent tier.
