Pulmonary function is a different day
Hospitals and pulmonary clinics also staff a testing lab. The day there's scheduled and weekday, spent coaching patients through spirometry, lung volumes and diffusion capacity, then judging whether the effort was good enough for the numbers to mean anything. - What's a respiratory therapist's role at a code?
You take the airway. When a rapid response or a cardiac arrest is called, the respiratory therapist manages ventilation and intubation support and stays with that patient afterward if they end up on a ventilator. It's why hospitals staff respiratory around the clock and why respiratory is paged from anywhere in the building.
- Is neonatal and pediatric respiratory therapy a separate job?
In practice, yes. Neonatal intensive care runs its own equipment, its own ventilation strategies and its own emergencies, and hospitals treat it as a specialty with its own orientation and often its own credential. Therapists tend to settle on one side or the other, and postings for children's hospitals say so plainly.
- What's the difference between the CRT and the RRT?
They're the two tiers of the same NBRC exam path: the CRT is the entry credential and the RRT is the advanced one, and hospital postings for critical care usually name the RRT. - What does ventilator weaning involve?
It's the slow half of critical care and much of what the job is judged on. You reduce support in steps, watch how the patient's own breathing takes over, read blood gases against what you're seeing at the bedside, and decide with the intensivist whether today is the day the tube comes out. Getting it wrong in either direction costs the patient, so the judgment matters more than the machine does.
