Veterinarian Jobs
Veterinarian pay and benefits
One national exam separates veterinary school from practice. The NAVLE is taken in the final year and every state board builds its license on it, and many add a law exam of their own, open book in Georgia, Minnesota and California.

Production pay is normal here
In 2024, 56% of associate veterinarians were paid on production, and 70% of new graduates expected to be. ProSal pays a monthly draw against a percentage of what you produce: production is totaled for the period, the draw comes off it, and the balance is paid. Whether that draw is a floor is a contract question. Negative accrual, where a shortfall is carried forward against later production or taken back, is the clause to read for, and contracts without it are advertised as a selling point.

4Your questions about veterinarian jobs, answered
- What species do veterinarian jobs cover?
Small animal companion practice is the bulk of the market; mixed practice adds farm calls and a truck; equine, food animal, exotics and lab animal medicine are each their own working life, with their own hours. The practice name and the posting title normally say which one you're looking at, and the on-call expectation follows from it.
- What's a relief veterinarian?
A veterinarian who covers other people's shifts, booked by the day or the week, either independently or through an agency. Practices use relief to cover leave and vacancies, and plenty of veterinarians build a full schedule out of it because it pays well and hands back control of the calendar. You bring your own license, insurance and tax arrangements.
- What's a rotating internship?
An optional year after graduation, spent rotating through services at a referral or teaching hospital under supervision. It pays a stipend rather than an associate's salary, and it's the normal route toward a residency and board specialty. Going straight into general practice is the more common choice and closes nothing off permanently.
