ABO's ladder stops being an exam at the top. The Masters designation opens to an optician who has held Advanced Certification through a full three-year renewal cycle, and the qualifying work is authorship or teaching: two published ABO-approved Level III articles, or two Level III courses you are the approved speaker for, or one of each. A committee reviews the evidence, and there's nothing left to sit.

- Where does ABO sit inside a state license?
Inside the exam, where a state licenses opticians at all. New York's ophthalmic dispensing license is examined on ABO-NCLE's National Opticianry Competency Examination plus the ABO Practical Examination, under Part 67 of the Commissioner's Regulations and Educ. Law 7124, so passing ABO's papers there is a step in licensure and not an alternative to it.
- Does passing it help if I move?
It can save you the exam half. Washington made the ABO and NCLE national competency and practical examinations its licensure examination for dispensing opticians on March 15, 2018. Florida asks for the same 2 written papers and a board-approved practical, and its rule counts the ABO-NCLE examination as one (64B12-9.001). California registers spectacle and contact lens dispensers separately, each on one written paper, ABO's for spectacles and NCLE's for lenses. The application, the fee and the state's own rules still start from scratch wherever you land.
- Does ABO cover contact lenses?
It covers spectacles. Contact lenses are NCLE's exam, and the states that regulate the work handle them separately, so New York adds a contact lens certificate on top of the dispensing license.
