A society fellowship counts toward the contact lens Masters
NCLE runs the same Masters structure as its spectacle-side twin, with one route the other doesn't have: Fellowship of the Contact Lens Society of America qualifies you outright, alongside the publishing and speaking routes. The rest of the requirement doesn't move: Advanced Certification carried through a full renewal cycle first. It is the only route into either Masters designation that a credential from another body can satisfy.

- Is fitting contact lenses regulated separately?
Where it's regulated, yes, and the shape differs. California's Board of Optometry registers a contact lens dispenser as its own credential beside the spectacle lens dispenser. Nevada builds it the other way: a holder of the limited license adds contact lens work by passing NCLE's standard, advanced and practical examinations, documenting 100 hours of contact lens training and sitting the state's law and ethics exam.
- Do I need the spectacle credential first?
In New York the order is fixed. Its contact lens certificate can only be issued at the same time as the ophthalmic dispensing license or after it, and the certificate is examined on NCLE's Contact Lens Registry Examination plus the NCLE practical. The ABO papers are the ones the license itself runs on.
- Is NCLE worth holding where nobody licenses opticians?
It travels to the states that do. New York, California, Nevada, Washington and Florida all examine contact lens work on NCLE's papers, so passing them in an unregulated state means arriving in one of those having already cleared its exam. Nothing about it authorizes the work where a state hasn't asked for a credential.
