Immunization Certified Jobs

Immunization certification is the training a pharmacy asks for before you give shots, and APhA runs the version this credential takes its name from. The vaccinating happens in retail and grocery pharmacy.

Accreditation attaches to the provider, and postings name the brand

Accreditation at ACPE attaches to the organization running a certificate program, so there isn't a list of approved courses to check a posting against. Any program from an accredited provider satisfies the federal training requirement, and APhA is the best known of those providers by a distance. So the same words on two postings can mean two different courses, both of them fine, and the thing to establish is who accredited the one you sat.

Your questions about immunization certified jobs, answered

Who is allowed to give the shot?

Federal law answers part of it and state law the rest. Under the PREP Act declaration a pharmacist may order and administer, and a pharmacy intern or pharmacy technician may administer while the supervising pharmacist stays readily and immediately available, with both the intern and the technician licensed or registered by their state board. The declaration reaches the ACIP schedule for ages 3 to 18, seasonal influenza from age 3 up, and FDA-authorized or licensed COVID-19 vaccines for ages 3 and over, and it preempts contrary state law for the influenza and COVID-19 vaccines through December 31, 2029. Everything outside that is each state's own rules.

Is the training certificate the whole requirement?

No. Under the same federal declaration a pharmacist, intern or technician administering covered vaccines holds a current certificate in basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which is the layperson-level card and not the provider-level BLS one, and interns and technicians complete a practical training program approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education. Pharmacists have their own training and reporting duties in the same paragraph, so nobody in the pharmacy is covered by a certificate alone.

Which roles carry it?

Pharmacists, interns and technicians. APhA runs one program for pharmacists and student pharmacists and a separate 6-hour one for technicians with Washington State University, split between self-study and a live seminar. State authority is tracked separately by NASPA, which keeps the current map of what pharmacists, interns and technicians may administer in each state, so the same certificate line means a different scope depending on the job and the state it sits in.
