The tier between two much bigger ones
Counting certificants shows the shape of this job, and the assistant tier is the thin band in the middle. As of July 1, 2026 the BACB counted 5,246 BCaBAs, against 260,174 registered behavior technicians below and 85,587 analysts above. Fifty technicians deliver hours for every assistant analyst the board certifies, and a manager filling this level draws from a pool a sixteenth the size of the analyst pool.

- Can I take a BCaBA job where there is no BCBA on staff?
Your certification stops being usable, because a BCaBA delivers services only under supervision the BACB recognizes. That means a BCBA, and through the end of 2026 it can also be a psychologist board-certified by ABPP in behavioral and cognitive psychology who was tested in applied behavior analysis; from January 1, 2027 the BACB narrows it to BCBAs. Whoever it is has to have completed the 8-hour supervision training first.
- Do states license assistant behavior analysts separately?
Several do, on top of the national certification. Washington licenses an assistant behavior analyst under Ch. 18.380 RCW and Oregon under ORS 676.810; North Carolina takes BCaBA or the QABA equivalent for its version and requires a supervisory agreement with your supervising licensed behavior analyst filed with the board (N.C.G.S. 90-738, 21 NCAC 05 .0401). Colorado's 2026 act creates the same level with its licensing requirement phasing in on July 1, 2028. Where a state works this way, changing supervisors is a filing and not only a scheduling change.
- Can one posting appear on both the BCaBA and BCBA lists?
