BCBA Jobs

ABA agencies, school districts and adult services hire Board Certified Behavior Analysts, and a posting will say BCBA. The BACB issues it as a graduate-level certification, one step above the assistant tier and two above the technician.

The 10-school-day clock a behavior team works to

Federal law puts a deadline on district behavior work. Within 10 school days of a decision to move a student for a conduct violation, the team decides whether the disability caused the behavior. If it did, 34 CFR 300.530(f)(1) splits: with no behavior intervention plan written, the district owes a functional behavioral assessment, unless it ran one before the incident, and a plan built from it. With a plan already in hand, it reviews and modifies that instead. The IEP team owns the choice, and the regulation names no certification.

Your questions about BCBA jobs, answered

What does a BCBA job include besides writing programs?

Overseeing the people who deliver the therapy hours is the other half of the work, and it carries a prerequisite of its own. Before you supervise an RBT, a BCaBA, or anyone accruing fieldwork toward certification, the BACB asks for an 8-hour supervision training built on its Supervisor Training Curriculum Outline (2.0). A posting that puts a team under you expects you to have that already.

What does the caseload number in a posting tell me?

The client count is only half of the arithmetic. Each RBT delivering those hours needs a share of the service hours they deliver supervised every calendar month, and that share comes off your calendar before assessment, program writing and parent training start. A client count on its own doesn't say how much of the month is already spoken for.

Is the certification enough to practice?

The BACB certifies you and a state licenses you, and they're separate applications with separate renewals. The BACB's own licensure table listed 40 states and the District of Columbia regulating behavior analysts when we read it in August 2026, and where a law applies the license is what authorizes the work, so a move means a fresh application even though the certification itself carries over. Our BCBA guide covers the certification side.
