Clinical Liaison pay and benefits

A clinical liaison works for the facility receiving the patient, not for the hospital where that patient is lying, and everyone in the room knows it. Being useful to the discharge planner anyway is the job.

What the incentive measures

Pay here is a base plus an incentive, and the incentive defines the job. It may count admissions you convert yourself or the facility's census; it may pay monthly or quarterly; it may carry a floor while you learn a territory or none at all; and it may or may not hold the target steady when a referral source closes or changes hands. All of that's set at hire and rarely reopened.

Your questions about clinical liaison jobs, answered

Is a clinical liaison job a sales job?

Partly so, and postings rarely say it plainly. You assess referred patients for clinical appropriateness, which is real clinical judgment, and you also carry a census or referral target for the facility you represent. People who enjoy it like the autonomy and the relationships; people who leave usually say the target was the job and the assessment was the wrapper.

What clinical background do liaisons come from?

Liaisons come out of nursing, sometimes out of physical or respiratory therapy. The point of the license is that you can read a chart in a referring hospital and judge whether your facility can take that patient. Employers hire the clinical background first and teach the referral process second.

How much of a clinical liaison job is travel?

You spend most of the week inside a territory. You round on referring hospitals, sit with discharge planners and case managers, and see patients at the bedside before they transfer, so you work out of a car and set your own day. That independence is the appeal, and it also means nobody is checking the calendar except you.
