EMS runs on 2 roles: EMTs, who provide basic life support on ambulance calls, and paramedics, who add advanced care such as IVs, medications, and airway management.

EMT courses run a few months and cover basic life support. Paramedic programs take a year or more and add cardiac monitoring, medications, and advanced airway work.

A state EMS certification at your level, and most states use the National Registry (NREMT) exam to grant it. Employers also expect a clean driving record for ambulance work.

Shift work built around coverage: 12-hour shifts are common in busy systems, 24-hour shifts with station downtime in slower ones. Nights, weekends, and holidays rotate through everyone.

Fire departments, private ambulance companies, and hospital-based EMS services. Private companies also staff non-emergency medical transport between facilities.

Paramedic is the step up from EMT, and from there flight paramedic, ER technician, or a paramedic-to-RN bridge program. EMS field experience carries weight in all of them.
