Paramedic Jobs

Paramedic pay and benefits

Paramedics practice on a physician medical director's protocols: standing orders they carry out on their own, and a radio or phone consult for everything past them. The certification is the highest EMS level, and the protocols change with the employer.

The three parts of paramedic school

Classroom work covers pharmacology, cardiology and airway management. Clinical rotations put you inside the hospital for the skills that need volume: the operating room for airway practice, the ICU for drips, labor and delivery, psychiatry. The field internship comes last, months on an ambulance running calls as the lead clinician while a preceptor signs off on each one, and it's the part that decides whether you finish.

Your questions about paramedic jobs, answered

What's critical care or flight transport?

Moving the sickest patients between hospitals, by ground or by helicopter, with a paramedic and usually a nurse running drips, ventilators and balloon pumps for the length of the trip. It takes years of experience and additional certification, pays better than street work, and many paramedics move toward it.

What's community paramedicine?

Community paramedicine runs on scheduled visits instead of emergencies. Paramedics check on people recently discharged, manage chronic conditions, and try to keep the frequent callers out of an ambulance, working from a list rather than a radio. It's a growing use of the license, it keeps ordinary hours, and it needs paramedics who are comfortable without a partner and a truck.

Does a paramedic certification transfer between states?

It transfers partly. The national registry certification is recognized widely, and most states build their license on it, but each state issues its own and can add its own requirements, protocols and drug lists. Moving means an application, sometimes a protocol exam, and a wait, so start it before the move.
