Clinical assistants room patients, take vitals, draw blood, run EKGs and assist with procedures. Administrative assistants handle scheduling, insurance verification, referrals and the phones. Plenty of postings are both, and a practice that says back office means the clinical half.

Any of the recognized ones, and some name a single body. The CMA comes from the AAMA, the RMA from the AMT, the CCMA from the NHA, and each sets its own eligibility, with routes through an accredited program and routes through documented work experience. It's a task delegated by the supervising provider rather than one the assistant is licensed for, so the delegation makes it lawful and it ends when the supervising relationship does. States set the limits differently: some restrict certain routes or require documented training first, and New York bars an unlicensed assistant from drawing up or administering any injection, vaccines included. Employers add their own competency sign-off on top.

Specializing happens through the practice you join. Dermatology assistants set up procedures and handle specimens, orthopedics adds casting and splinting, pediatrics runs on vaccine schedules and weight-based dosing, and each builds skills the next specialty won't ask about. A posting naming a specialty wants someone who has already worked in it.
