ASCP's board of registry and the National Credentialing Agency merged in October 2009 to form the ASCP Board of Certification, and the new body replaced 2 titles with one: medical technologist from ASCP and clinical laboratory scientist from the NCA both became medical laboratory scientist. Payroll systems moved slower than the profession did, so medical technologist survives in job codes, people certified before the change still hold it, and several licensing states, California among them, kept the clinical wording. - What departments does a medical laboratory scientist work in?
Chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology, blood bank, and increasingly molecular. Large hospitals staff each one separately and you specialize; smaller labs expect a generalist who covers all of them on a shift. - What makes blood bank different from the rest of the laboratory?
The result leaves the laboratory in a bag and goes into a person. Compatibility testing, antibody identification and issuing units carry a different kind of consequence from a potassium result, so the checks are heavier and the documentation is stricter.
- What's a critical value?
A result dangerous enough that somebody has to be told now. The laboratory holds a defined list, and when a value crosses it you stop and telephone a clinician who can act, then record who you spoke to and when. Read-back is required and inspectors check the log, so the phone call is part of the test.
