The counselor titles follow the license, and the abbreviation belongs to the state: LPC is the most widespread, with LMHC in Florida, New York and Washington among others, and LPCC in California. - What's the difference between community mental health and a group practice?
Community agencies serve the people who need care most and can pay least, so caseloads run heavier and the paperwork is Medicaid's, for clients with more severe needs. Group practices run on outpatient insurance, lighter acuity and a longer client relationship. Mental health therapists often start in community mental health, because it hires new clinicians and supervises them.
- How are therapist jobs paid?
Salaried roles pay whether or not the client shows up, and attach a productivity target you have to hit. Fee-split roles pay a percentage of what each session collects, which means a no-show pays nothing unless the practice charges a cancellation fee. Group practices lean on the second, where the split, the cancellation policy and who chases the balance decide what the job pays.
