Physician Assistant pay and benefits

Seven states let a physician assistant practice with no named physician at all, and others have replaced supervision with collaboration on conditions of their own, often a threshold of hours. What a posting means by supervision depends on where it's.

Physician associate is the same job

Four states have put the new title in statute and Kansas allows it, while the certification and the remaining licenses still read assistant, so postings overwhelmingly say physician assistant. Where one does say physician associate, it's the same job asking for the same PA-C, and both titles reach this page. The letters after the name are the reliable part, because those haven't changed.

Your questions about physician assistant jobs, answered

Can a physician assistant change specialty?

Yes, and it's what the profession is built around. Training is generalist and the certification is generalist, so moving from emergency medicine to dermatology or surgery takes a new job and on-the-job learning instead of a new residency. Employers do prefer experience in the specialty, so lateral moves are easier early and get harder the deeper you go.

How is physician assistant certification maintained?

Through continuing education logged in cycles, plus a recertification exam at long intervals. The certification is national and the license is your state's, so both have to stay current, and a lapse in either stops you working. Postings say certified and mean it.

What does supervision mean for a physician assistant day to day?

Usually less than the word suggests. You see your own patients and make your own decisions, with a physician available and a written agreement setting out what needs review, and states differ in how much that agreement has to specify. In practice the difference between one job and another is the culture of the team more than the paperwork behind it.
