Veterinary Assistant pay and benefits

Handling frightened animals is the part of this job that sends staff to urgent care. A practice's protocol for fractious patients, and whether it has one at all, tells you how seriously it takes the safety of the people doing the holding.

Kennel attendant, animal care attendant, veterinary assistant

Three titles cover overlapping work. Kennel attendant and animal care attendant are the ward titles: feeding, walking, cleaning, and watching hospitalized patients between treatments. Veterinary assistant covers that work and the exam room as well, holding for procedures and setting up what the technician needs. Practices move people between the two and hire from one into the other, and all of those titles reach this page.

Your questions about veterinary assistant jobs, answered

Is there a certification for veterinary assistants?

There's one, and it's optional almost everywhere. The approved veterinary assistant credential comes from a program plus an exam, and it signals to a clinic that you've been taught restraint, husbandry and safety formally. Clinics still hire and train assistants on the job, so it helps and is rarely required.

How does shelter work differ from a private practice?

The volume and the purpose differ. A shelter runs intake, vaccination and high-volume spay-neuter on animals whose history nobody knows, often with limited funds and hard decisions attached. Private practice sees owned animals with records, an owner in the room and a bill at the end. Both teach you handling fast; only one of them teaches you it at that scale.

What part of the job do people not expect?

How much of it's emotional and how much is cleaning. Assistants hold animals for euthanasia and stand with owners afterwards, and they also mop, launder and scrub kennels every shift. The animal handling that draws people in is real, and it comes with both.
