What the childcare rule fixes and what it leaves to your state
11 health and safety topics are set federally for the childcare providers a state funds through the Child Care and Development Fund, and pediatric first aid and CPR is one of them (45 CFR 98.41), for everyone but the grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles and separately housed siblings a lead agency may exclude from the term child care providers (45 CFR 98.42(c)). Each state then picks which of the 11 have to be done before anyone works unsupervised, and sets the annual training hours, inside a federal outer bound of 3 months for orientation (45 CFR 98.44). - Is this the card a clinical job wants?
Usually not. The layperson and workplace card covers single-rescuer CPR, AED use and first aid, and hospitals and clinics ask for the provider-level BLS card instead. On this board the layperson card turns up on community and in-home roles, where the employer wants somebody trained, not a clinical credential.
- A posting just says CPR. Which one is that?
Read the job, because the words don't separate cleanly. Both credentials are named CPR in ordinary speech, and our own filter carries them as 2 values, so a posting saying only CPR can be read either way. Direct patient care means the provider card; a front desk, a classroom or a client's home usually means this one.
- Who has to hold it?
Employers put it where the risk is, and some rules put it there for them. Under OSHA's general industry standard, unless a nearby infirmary, clinic or hospital treats all injured employees, the workplace has to have someone adequately trained to render first aid (29 CFR 1910.151(b)).
