A certificate in 3 of the other 5 categories will do it. A state approved medication aide program can admit someone certified in good standing on the nurse aide registry as a home health aide, a long term care aide or an ICF/IID care aide, who is also able to read, write and speak English. The prerequisites for the certificate itself add being 18, a high school or general equivalency diploma, 6 months of experience working as a certified nurse aide, and the physical and mental capability to perform the duties safely. The course runs at least 40 hours with at least 16 of them supervised practical training, and renewal comes round every 12 months against 2 years for the certificates underneath it, on 8 hours of continuing education that the first year after certification is exempt from.

The endorsement is a second layer inside the medication certificate. Blood glucose testing, medications or nutrition through a nasogastric or gastrostomy tube, and oral metered dose inhalers and nebulizers stay closed to a certified medication aide until they've finished a department approved advanced training program and demonstrated competency for the service. Insulin sits behind a heavier version of the same gate, an advanced training program plus a competency and skills examination. An aide who completes an advanced program and demonstrates competence can ask for a departmental certificate bearing the endorsement, and once the department issues one, a notation of the advanced training goes onto that aide's record in the nurse aide registry. The reckoning comes at renewal. If an aide asks to renew and there's been a continuous period of 24 consecutive months in which they provided no nursing or health related services for monetary compensation, they go back through either a new training and competency evaluation program or a new competency evaluation on its own, whichever they choose. One exception sits beside it. The department reviews when asked and may grant an exception to removal from the registry for an aide who completed a practical or registered nursing education program after certification and files a waiver application, which then has conditions of its own about good standing and open investigations. The examination waiting at the other end has 2 halves and 2 bars, at least 70 percent on the written or oral part and at least 80 percent accuracy on the skills part, and a candidate who misses is told at least which areas they failed and that they may retake it twice more without further training.
