Athletic Trainer pay and benefits

Athletic trainers are the first clinician on the scene when someone goes down, and the one who runs the rehabilitation afterward and decides when the athlete is cleared. Between injuries the day is taping and paperwork.

Employed by a clinic, based at a school

School and worksite coverage often runs on the outreach model: a hospital or a sports medicine clinic employs the athletic trainer and contracts the coverage out to the site where the work happens. Your pay and the person who signs your evaluation come from the employer, while the site sets what the days look like. A posting written by the employer and a posting written by the site describe the same job differently, down to who buys the tape and the ice.

Your questions about athletic trainer jobs, answered

Is an athletic trainer the same as a personal trainer?

No. Athletic trainers prevent, assess and rehabilitate injuries under a physician's direction, and 49 states and the District of Columbia regulate the practice, by license in most of them. California regulates only the name: a 2024 law in force since January 2025 reserves the title for people certified by the Board of Certification. Since 2022 new entrants qualify through a master's program and that certification. Personal training is a fitness credential with no clinical scope.

Where do athletic trainers work besides sports teams?

The work has moved away from the sideline. Industrial and occupational health programs put them in factories and warehouses to handle strains and prevention, and performing arts, military and public safety employers hire them too. Those roles trade travel and evenings for ordinary hours.

What hours do athletic trainer jobs run?

In a traditional setting the hours are the season's: practices, home games, travel and weekend tournaments, with the quiet stretch off-season, so the posting's job title matters less than which teams you cover. Clinic-based and industrial roles keep normal hours, which is a large part of why people move to them.
