- What does a mammography technologist do?
You image breast tissue and manage the person while doing it. The positioning is precise and uncomfortable, compression has to be right for the image to be readable, and a screening list runs to a tight schedule. Diagnostic days are slower and heavier: more views, a radiologist reading nearby, and patients who already know something was seen.
- What does federal law require to work in mammography?
The federal Mammography Quality Standards Act puts numbers on it, over and above the registry: 40 contact hours of training in mammography and 25 examinations under direct supervision before you work on your own, then 200 examinations every 24 months and 15 continuing education units every 36 months to stay qualified. Fall below the experience floor and it takes another 25 supervised examinations to resume.
