In many departments the technologist places the IV and gives the gadolinium, on a physician's order and inside what state law and the employer allow, with a radiologist immediately available. Renal function used to decide whether a patient could have gadolinium at all; with the Group II agents most departments now run, the ACR calls eGFR screening optional before an intravenous dose. Postings ask for documented IV competency, and where a state regulates contrast injection it certifies radiologic technologists, so departments spell out who may push the line.

- What's MRI safety screening?
The magnet is never switched off, so everything entering the room gets screened: implants, pacemakers, surgical clips, shrapnel, and the oxygen cylinder somebody wheeled in without thinking. Departments run zoned access for exactly this reason, and an MRI technologist is the last check before anything crosses the line.
- How is an MRI day different from x-ray or CT?
It runs longer and quieter. Scans take tens of minutes, so you handle fewer patients and spend far more time with each one, talking claustrophobic people through a tube and keeping them still enough for the sequence to hold. Some lists include sedated patients, which brings nursing into the room alongside you.
- Do MRI technologists work alone?
Often, particularly on outpatient evening and weekend lists where one technologist covers the scanner. It suits people who like their own pace. It's also a genuine consideration for safety screening, since there's nobody to catch what you missed, and hospitals tend to staff more thickly than imaging centers do.
